"She was like stepping out of the way for another gentleman to kind of squeeze in, unfortunately Colleen kind of got tripped up on her own feet and fell backwards," Jessica Roman told ABC News.
Roman said it was the "longest, strangest, craziest two seconds of my life."
Park officials located her body 400 below where she had been standing. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner, park officials said.
Burns' final days were well-documented on social media. Her last Instagram photo shows her taking in the view at the picturesque canyon.
Meanwhile, friends and colleagues mourned her on social media.
