Couple Shot, Stabbed By Neighbor Who Later Died Of Overdose: DA

Sources say the 26-year-old person of interest in a Bucks County double homicide case is dead of a drug overdose.

A young Bucks County couple was stabbed and shot by a 26-year-old neighbor, who has since been found dead in Philadelphia's Kensington section of a suspected drug overdose, authorities said Wednesday night.

First Assistant District Attorney Greg Shore provided the tragic update in a case that has had the community on edge since the bodies of Tyler and Christina Roy were found Tuesday in the couple's Northampton home.

Shore said the couple, who were both in their late 20s, had no prior contact with the now-deceased suspect, identified as Daniel Mooney. Authorities say Mooney entered through an unlocked door, and it was evident a struggle ensued upstairs, where the couple was later found deceased. Police say they are confident Mooney acted alone, but they continue to process the crime scene for all evidence.

"This tragedy is unfathomable to all of us," Shore said, calling it a difficult end to a very difficult case.

Shore said the couple was killed sometime overnight between Monday and Tuesday and that Mooney was in their home for a "prolonged" period of time.

Both victims were stabbed multiple times, and they were both shot with a gun owned by Roy, according to Shore. A painter who was working on the couple's home discovered their bodies around 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Mooney allegedly stole the couple's Ford Edge SUV, which was later found in Northeast Philadelphia.

At this time, police do not know what led Mooney to the home. "It’s very difficult to say what this was all about," Shore said. Detectives are working to determine if other items were stolen from the home.

Authorities in Bucks County were notified of the development in the case by Philadelphia police shortly after a press conference Wednesday afternoon. Police in Philadelphia said a man, who was unidentified at the time, was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital's Episcopal Campus.

Detectives quickly determined the man who had fatally overdosed was Mooney, whose family has been cooperating with the investigation.

Shore said the Roys led vibrant lives. He was a construction estimator, and she was a photographer who had graduated from The University of the Arts, according to her website.

They had purchased the home about two years ago, and were in process of renovating it.
