3 Dead, 194 Injured In 4th Of July Weekend Crashes Across PA

PENNSYLVANIA — Three people are dead and nearly 200 are injured after a massive number of vehicle crashes during the 4th of July holiday weekend, according to statistics from the Pennsylvania State Police.

Alcohol was a factor in 59 of the staggering 668 crashes that occurred over the busy holiday, although none of the fatalities were alcohol related.

The statistics cover the five-day period from June 30 to July 4. The deaths occurred on the PA Turnpike, Troop R (the northeastern part of the state), and Troop F (the north-central region).

Additionally, police said they made 505 drunk driving arrests and issued 23,738 traffic citations. Common reasons for citations besides alcohol were not wearing seatbelts and not securing children in their carseats.

Statistics this year were almost identical to last year, which saw four people die in accidents over the same period, with 649 total crashes, according to state statistics.
