Asphalt Paving Scams On The Rise In Montgomery Co., Police Warn

Contractors showing up at your door unannounced is the "number one sign" they're scammers, authorities said.

LOWER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, PA — Asphalt paving scams continue to plague the region, with police departments in Montgomery County issuing warnings this week about an increase in related criminal activity.

Police in Lower Providence urged residents to "do your research" before hiring a contractor or engaging one in talks.

"The #1 most obvious sign that you are going to be scammed is that the contractor shows up at your door," the department said in a statement.

Often, scammers claim to have extra asphalt from a previous job which they'll offer to provide to victims either for a discount or for free on top of other expenses.

They're also likely to drive unmarked vehicles and avoid written contracts.
