Eagles Legendary Kelly Green Jerseys Return: When They'll Wear Them

PHILADELPHIA, PA — For at least a decade, the Eagles and owner Jeffrey Lurie have been pursuing the "Stranger Things" path to reinventing the 1980s in a modern style. The Birds' kelly green jerseys, not seen in regular action on the field in decades, are making a comeback in 2023.

The team announced specific game dates for the special jerseys this week, coinciding with the start of training camp. They'll don the old colors just twice, both times at home: on Oct. 22 against the Dolphins, and Nov. 26 vs the Bills.

The Eagles hyped the return of the jerseys with a throwback Randall Cunningham-Eric Lindros-Veterans Stadium-filled video highlighting "old school Philadelphia," an epoch when, apparently, the "block parties were loud, and the fashion was louder."

Typically, alternate jerseys are only worn once or twice a year, and up to three times on some occasions. While the jerseys were a mainstay in the 90s, the Birds have not worn the fabled kelly greens since 2010.

Restoring the kelly green uniforms in some capacity has been a goal of the Eagles and Lurie for years. Lurie called it a "high priority" back in 2019. The issue was long one of NFL protocol, which used to state that teams could not use more than one helmet. The Eagles understandably didn't want to mix and match their current helmets with the old jersey colors.

The movement gained significant traction from some fans, particularly those who grew up watching the Eagles in those colors. The initial announcement earlier in the year drew attention from around the league and the world, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and NFL Brazil among those reacting.
