Montco Warns Residents to be Wary of Sheriff's Deputy Scam
Scammers are calling residents and posing as sheriff's deputies, the Sheriff's Office said.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to be wary of scammers who are posing as county sheriff’s deputies.
“Convincing con artists posing as sheriff’s deputies are attempting to scam taxpayers with intimidating phone calls demanding cash or personal information,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
People have reported to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office that callers have told residents that the IRS is seeking unpaid taxes, or that there is a warrant out for their arrest, Sheriff Russell J. Bono said.

“I want to make sure that citizens know how to identify a scammer and, if they’ve been contacted by one, know where to report it,” Bono said. “The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office never makes phone calls regarding IRS matters and we don’t collect personal information over the phone.”
These scam callers are identifying themselves using titles and ranks, and have been “spoofing” caller IDs so that it appears the calls are coming from the Sheriff’s Office, Bono said.
