PHILADELPHIA, PA — Eagles Super Bowl champion quarterback Nick Foles will become a free agent, the team confirmed Wednesday, officially ending his era in Philadelphia.

The news, first reported by NFL Insider Field Yates and confirmed by the team hours later, means that the Eagles will not exercise their franchise tag on Foles. If they used that tag, they could've kept the rights to Foles, at a very high monetary cost, in order to trade him.

By letting Foles become a free agent, they are giving him the freedom to choose where he would like to play next.

It's also possibly a valuation on the part of Eagles general manager Howie Roseman: the money it would cost to keep Foles in order to trade him for other assets could be better used to sign other players directly.

Foles' future in Philadelphia has always been questionable at best, as oft-injured but star quarterback Carson Wentz was thought to be the true franchise player. Head coach Doug Pederson named Wentz the starter for 2019 following the end of the Eagles season.

Some possible destinations for Foles include the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, and Washington Redskins. Teams that have an aging veteran, like the New England Patriots or New York Giants, could also be interested in Foles' services.

The 2018 Super Bowl MVP brought playoff magic to Philadelphia in two consecutive years. As the architect of the "Philly Special," he led the underdog Eagles to their first ever Super Bowl championship, cementing his place in Philadelphia lore along the way.
