Phillies World Series Run Brought Historic $78 Million To Philadelphia Economy
Philadelphia cemented its reputation as one of the world's greatest sports cities during a once in a lifetime Red October.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Tyrants to out of staters and wild animals to even the fonder gazers from afar, Philadelphians have proven again they live in one of the world's greatest sports cities.
The economic impact of the Phillies miraculous run to the World Series this fall totalled some $78 million pumped into the local economy, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau said Wednesday.
"Philadelphia truly is a sports destination, and we demonstrate time and time again how we excel at hosting the country's largest sporting events," said Larry Needle, the executive director of the Bureau's PHL Sports division.

In a digital age where rumors question the sport's growth and officials are ceaselessly tinkering with rule changes, it serves too as a resounding reaffirmation of baseball as America's oldest and most defining pasttime, and as one of the world's most influential and beloved sports.

Needle added that the exposure for Philadelphia globally from the World Series is "notable." Postseason press credentials were issued to more than 1,900 media members, including press from 10 international markets, according to Bureau statistics.
The World Series also averaged more television viewers per game than any World Series since 2019, with most games far outstripping views from 2020's Dodgers vs. Rays series and 2021's Astros vs. Braves series.
Philadelphia also saw an outsized impact compared other cities' World Series runs. Houston's own championship run in 2022 generated less than $50 million, while Atlanta's run last year brought about $30 million, according to published estimates from economic analysts.
Hotels, restaurants, and staff in Philadelphia all saw a major windfall from the playoffs. There were a total of 34,000 overnight visitors and 35,000 total hotel room nights, according to Tourism Economics, a firm that analyzes and publishes economic trends.

“The (Phillies) generated significant impacts in the local community," said Greg Pepitone, senior economist at Tourism Economics. "Out-of-town visitors and national media that attended games also spent money at local businesses during their stay, including bars and restaurants, hotels, retailers, and attractions."
Philadelphia hosted eight playoff games, including three World Series games. Impact was also felt in countless bars and restaurants that hosted watch parties. Impromptu street festivals and celebrations after postseason wins around the country, ranging from St. Louis to Atlanta, San Diego, and Houston, also served as a boon locally.
Despite the $78 million, the larger impact was arguably the culture one. In the midst of a chaotic election season and historic inflation, the Delaware Valley mobilized behind a force of nature. "Dancing on My Own" played on loudspeakers at 5 o'clock every afternoon, a bright red cap was placed on top of Billy Penn, and the world learned again no one can roar like Philly.
