A Northampton Without Smoke

For all those that have resolved to quit smoking this year, this is an aggregation of their tips.

Honest opinion. Do you think there are a lot of smokers in our community? I do. Our community has been hit hard by the economy, and I have personally noticed an increase in the smokers around town since the start of the recession.

The most heart-wrenching of smokers are the ones who are 20-something and younger. Smoking is not sexy nor does it serve a purpose. In 2012, we know too much about what happens to our body through smoking cigarettes. To see someone smoke a cigarette is as if they are waving a flag of defeat. Now, they will say that they are enjoying a cigarette, but there is a larger issue at hand.

The larger issue I speak of is the feeling of uncertainty. Uncertaintiy begets anxiety. Anxiety begets stress, and smoking is a form of temporary stress reducton. This applies to everything. Uncertainty of fitting in or uncertainty of paying the bills on time. They both lead to anxiety.

The other side of this is if you are too certain with life, you will be bored. Smoking then leads to a variety and an escape from perfection.

Whichever way you look at the issue of smoking, I want us to make a conscious effort to alleviate our community from smoke. Remember that we are the karma of our ancestors. We are setting the footing for our children and their children.

I have many clients who are trying or have quit. Here are some of their tips:

1. It's okay to use the patch or any other nicotine replacement therapy.

2. Sam-E can help your mood lows. (This is a supplement)

3. Book an appointment for something. This allows you to walk on the line of change and boredom. You know what you are doing, but don't know how it will turn out! Sometimes all it takes is a new haircut, facial, or massage.

4. Sleep, water, and exercise. The healthy lifestyle America kind of doesn't allow!

5. Take care of your stress now and not later.

Finally, there is no way to force someone to quit smoking. You can only influence them. The power comes from within them. You can just spark it!
