Ask the Tech Guy: Apple iOS 5 Dictionary Fine Tuning

There are many features and improvements in the new iOS 5 from Apple, one of many that I am happy about is the ability to fine tune the the auto-correct dictionary.

In the old days (pre iOS 5), the only ways to add a word to the auto-correct dictionary was to type it over and over again or to add a contact with the new word as the contact name. Now, in iOS 5, there is a new way to add words.

To add a word:

  •  Go to Settings>General>Keyboard.
  •  Go to the Shortcuts area and tap on Add New Shortcut.
  •  In the Phrase area, type in the word that you want added to auto-correct  dictionary.
  •  Leave the shortcut area blank. Note that the area says, "Optional."
  •  Tap Save in the upper right side of the screen.

That's all there is to it.
