Moyo Yoga Studios' art benefit raises hundreds of dollars for CHOP

Children use their creativity in annual fundraiser.

It was works of art and heart at ’ recent event that raised $500 for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Moyo teachers and their families along with studio clients and members of the community attended the fourth annual children’s art show at the barn at 4335 Skippack Pike, in , the Sunday before Valentine’s Day. The barn, according to a Realtor, served as a one-time location of American Bandstand, and will be Moyo’s future home.

Colorful, hand-drawn or painted pictures from the Moyo staff’s children and grandchildren covered the barn’s walls, while framed art and construction paper and plastic creatures were displayed on every available ledge space. The artwork sold for 25, 50 and 75 cents. Two tables held the “Best in Show” silent auction, where visitors could bid on certain pieces. Prices started at $1.

Throughout the last few years, the event has flourished from its rather humble beginnings, Moyo teacher Diane Kistler said.

“In the beginning, we were just trying to get rid of my girls’ art,” Kistler said with a laugh. “I’ve always wanted them to get involved with their community and give back. Volunteering is a big part of our life.”

The benefit raised $50 its first year, Kistler said, and last year the final total was $500.

Past beneficiaries include Project H.O.M.E. in Philadelphia. This year, when Kistler asked daughters Zoe, 12, and Holly, 6, to whom they wanted to contribute the money, they responded that, “We want to help sick children,” she said.

Contributors Holly and Ally Mahoney, 7, said they were happy to help CHOP.

“I care about the children, and I hope they get better soon,” Holly said.

This was the first year Ally submitted pieces for the benefit, and said she had “maybe eight” items up for sale. Holly speculated she had perhaps done “close to 100.” After surveying the room, a reported noted she might be correct.

Moyo Yoga Studios is currently located at 4402 Skippack Pike. Under its new roof, which will open in about a year, the staff hopes to expand their services to include a café and massage.
