PJPII Girls Soccer Started Season Off With A Bang

High school hosted the first scrimmage for its girls soccer team Tuesday.

Pope John Paul II girls soccer coach Mark Beck has seen his fair share of obstacles during last season, which he hopes to overcome this year. "We are playing at home for the first time," Beck said. "We weren't able to play here due to field conditions."

As the girls took to the field, they showed the Wissahickon Trojans that they are in it to win it. Despite any error that the team made, whether it was playing too rough and giving Wissahickon the opportunity for a free kick, they played strong and solid throughout the game. They worked together as a team, on both the offense and defense. This could be due, in part, to the maturity of the team.

"We were a very young team (last year)," said Beck. "We are bringing a lot of that back this year....however, practice is going really well and they've been working really hard. The maturity has started to show up, and we've got a great group of seniors that have been leading us."

Both teams got a chance to work on their plays, as well as size up their opponents. The scrimmages also gives the players the chance to evaluate their current skill levels and position on the team.

Beck and the girls team are all hoping for a great season. "Last year we were just under 500 (wins and losses)," Beck said. "We are ecstatic about playing here at Pope John Paul for the home fields."
