Ride the WAVE at Perkiomen Valley High School's Post-Prom Event

Those who attend the dance, and even students who don't, are invited.

You can't put a price on peace of mind when it comes to your son's or daughter's safety.

And you don't have to, thanks to WAVE (Wild Alternative Viking Event) 2011, 's 10th annual, free post-prom event.

The school's 11th and 12th graders, and any 10th-grade dates, are invited to keep the party going this Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. in an environment free of drugs and alcohol, but packed with activities and entertainment.

According to entertainment co-chair Ginny Graham, after students check in to the party—which has an outer space theme this year—they can enjoy some refreshments or partake in UFO laser tag, enter a handball tournament, participate in a pie-eating contest, zoom down the three-story space shuttle slide, get an airbrush tattoo, play arcade games or at the casino tables, let a massage therapist soothe away any tension, enjoy the talents of DJ Komp, as well as student bands, and star in Big Head Videos. Some of the inflatables can be seen in action here.

One of the more popular activities is an Amazing Race-styled competition with "both physical and mental challenges," Graham stated in an email interview. "Each team is comprised of 10 team members. The first-place team will win $75 per member, and the second-place team will win $25 per member. We also encourage them to create T-shirts for their teams; the team with the best T-shirts wins $5 per member."

Even with all the fun, the dedication that goes into the post-prom isn't lost on some of the students.

"Last year, one very kind young man thanked me and said something like 'I know that you parents must put a lot of time into this, and we really do appreciate it because it is a lot of fun!'” Graham said. "Wow! That makes it all worthwhile!"

Indeed, volunteering for the prom is a practically a year-round task, Graham said. "The volunteers on the committee work throughout the year on all the planning, decorating, fundraising, setting up, cleaning up, coordinating volunteers, ordering T-shirts, etc.

"The night of post prom, volunteers do everything from help with registration, coat check, serve food, help provide security, “man” the inflatables, deal Black Jack, help with the pie-eating contest (among other tasks).

"It really is a lot of fun for the volunteers, too—many end up wishing that we could have invented some type of time machine so that we could go back in time to go to post prom, too!"

The community is invited to attend a walk-through of the "out of this world" event starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Anyone interested in volunteering for Saturday's WAVE or the 2012 WAVE can get in touch with the committee.

Registrations (available here on Patch) are still being accepted from students who want to attend post-prom.

Entertainment c0-chair Linda Gallagher encourages students to take part in this maximum twice-in-a-lifetime event.

"Post prom is a continuation of prom for the kids who attend," Gallagher stated in an email. "It is a magical night. You forget the day-to-day high school things, but when you look back, you always remember prom and post-prom."
