South Elementary Art Show Features Student Projects
Students and families enjoyed viewing over 1,000 pieces of artwork at South Elementary School.
By Thursday, March 31, the hallways and cafeteria at South Elementary had been turned into an art gallery. The theme for the second annual all-student art show was "American Art."
“I picked that theme this year to give us an opportunity to talk about American artists,” said Christina Bolc, South Elementary art teacher.
Throughout the school year, students have learned about the styles and genres of North American artists such as Eric Carle, Robert Indiana, Georgia O’Keeffe and N.C. Wyeth. South students were encouraged to reflect upon what they learned about these artists to create projects that show their own creativity.

For several weeks, Bolc mounted more than a thousand projects to be hung on the walls of the hallways. Parent volunteers, organized by Tracy Newman and Lorraine Citrone, helped hang the artwork throughout the school. Tables displayed sculptures and other pieces not suitable for hanging.
Students also helped design various wooden pieces to be raffled during the show. Items included a tray, a coat shelf/rack, a wagon and wooden boxes. Every South student put their painted fingerprints on the pieces, and Bolc, keeping with the red, white and blue American theme, painted each item for the raffle.

The South Home and School Association held a bake sale during the evening show to raise funds to benefit the school. Families sent in baked items to be sold during the three-and-a-half-hour event.
Most of the art projects will remain on display through spring break.
