Augustus Community Carnival Begins Aug. 22

Trappe's first major carnival, running this Wednesday through Saturday, will benefit the Augustus Lutheran Church and Trappe Fire Co.

The will run Aug. 22 through Aug. 25 at the Augustus Lutheran Church, located at 717 W. Main Street in Trappe, with proceeds going to the church’s property committee and Trappe Fire Company.

“It will have everything – rides, games, funnel cake, cotton candy, caramel apples,” said Jerry Zepp, a Trappe Fire Company volunteer who has been working with Augustus Church.

The carnival, which is the first of its kind in Trappe, will run from 6 pm - 10 pm on Wednesday and Thursday, 6 pm - 11 pm Friday, and 3 pm – 11 pm on Saturday.

A special wrist band price of $16 will be offered on Wednesday night and Saturday from 3 pm – 6 pm. Most of the proceeds will go to the Augustus Church property committee.

“Our church, like other churches nowadays, are trying to find new ways to raise money,” said Richard Buckmaster, carnival co-chair.  “We have a lot of property, and we need to increase our property budget.”

The carnival will also benefit the Trappe Fire Company’s campaign to build a new fire house.

“[Augustus] is being very generous with Trappe Fire,” said Zepp, who is helping to coordinate traffic control and EMT backup during the carnival.

The fire company will also run two booths – a dunk tank and a striker game - and will sell $9 chicken platters to close the weekend on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 4 pm.

The dinners will be cooked with help from Augustus neighbor Bougon Service Center, who will open its doors for on-site cooking.  Trappe Borough, the Community Club of Collegeville, and local businesses have also participated in helping to publicize the event.

“We wanted to call this the Augustus Community Carnival to emphasize community,” said Richard Buckmaster, a carnival co-chair.  “I see a lot of connections between Collegeville and Trappe, and this is a great way to get the communities together.

According to Buckmaster, things were kept “light” this year – but if it goes well, as they are expecting, many more community vendors will be invited for next year’s carnival.
