Vikings Beat Wildcats for First Time Since '07

Perk Valley opens PAC-10 season with total team win over Owen J. Roberts 31-12

It had been a long, and at times agonizing, wait to celebrate a victory over the Wildcats for head coach Scott Reed.

On Friday night, Reed and his staff's reward was well worth the wait as they got to savor a 19-point win over the 2010 Pioneer Athletic Conference co-champions.

Wildcats running back Dylan Briarson did his best to replace the one factor that contributed to Owen J. Roberts continuing their winning ways at the expense of the Vikings -- Ryan Brumfield, who graduated this past spring.

“It’s always been tough against them, “ said Reed.
"I think of '08 and '09 when we lost two games to them by three points combined, which I think was the most painful part. To leave here with a win like this is a great accomplishment.”

Owen J. Roberts got on the board first as quarterback Blake Bradshaw connected on a bomb to Jay Thompson with six minutes to play in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead as the point after attempt failed.

Following a recovered fumble, Perkiomen Valley quickly responded, as Donte Golsin-Goodman (16 carries, 186 yards) galloped 73 yards to pay dirt, scoring the first of three touchdowns on the night for the Vikings senior captain.

“This is awesome said.” Goodman. “Our O-line has been unbelievable. I may be tired tomorrow, but not right now. I have just been running in the holes they have been providing. We did a great job as a team tonight. The defense got us the ball in their territory three times, and it’s a lot easy scoring when you only have 30 or 40 yards to cover.”

In a tightly contested first half, the Vikings took advantage of great position following another Wildcat fumble to cash in right before the intermission.

A 25-yard field goal by Kyle Chudoba closed out the scoring and sent the teams into the locker room with Perk Valley leading 10-6.

The Vikings seized control of the game during a six-minute span in the third quarter. On consecutive plays from scrimmage, with a critical three-and –out sandwiched between, Golsin-Goodman broke into the clear for a 39-yard touchdown run. He scampered into the end zone from 25 yards out, posting the visitors to a 24-6 bulge.

Bradshaw connected with junior wide out Tyler Rogers from 30 yards to give the hosts their second touchdown. A seven-minute ball control clinic by the Vikings, which concluded with Stewart taking a knee on four consecutive snaps inside the Wildcats 10-yard line ended any hopes of a comeback.

“This is the way to start a season,” added Golsin-Goodman. “We have never beaten them before since I have been here, to finally do it my senior year is awesome. We have to keep up with the hard work and doing our jobs and the games will takes care for themselves.”

“Our conditioning came through again tonight,” added Reed. “We have a lot of talented kids that are playing one way. If we can get through the first half at even or better, we have shot to win any game as our guys wear the other team down in the later stages of the game. I am very proud of our guys taking control of a game that was back and forth the entire first half. That was huge.”

The Vikings will face off next week against, as Reed put it “Our Achilles heel the last three years” -- Pottstown.
