PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Phillies were bruised and battered and unrecognizable to themselves in Wednesday's night's no-hit World Series loss, but they had the Boss on their side.

Bruce Springsteen was spotted in the stands and drew raucous cheers when he appeared on the big screen during the game, surrounded by a sea of Phillies red.

Decked in a leather jacket and black cap, his outfit was reminiscent of Chase Utley's getup of Philadephia lore during the 2008 championship parade. Utley wore the same outfit to the stadium Wednesday.

Springsteen gave further weight to the notion that the Phillies are unequivocally America's team, with nearly 90 percent of the nation rooting for them in their World Series battle against the scandal-ridden Houston Astros, by at least one estimate.

A New Jersey native from Yankees territory, the Boss's "Streets of Philadelphia" was the score for the 1993 movie "Philadelphia" and became one of the most iconic songs of that generation. While he's been frequently spotted in Yankees caps at Yankees games, he's made his love of Philadelphia known in the past. And besides, all Yankees fans are Phillies fans in a series against the Astros.

Springsteen, U.S. First Lady and Montgomery County native Jill Biden, Will Smith, Miles Teller, and a full cadre from the '08 team including Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Cole Hamels, and Shane Victorino lent their support in person Wednesday.

The World Series is tied 2-2. Game 5 is set for 8:03 p.m. Thursday night in south Philadelphia.
