Murder Suspect Who Escaped Philly Prison Gets 55 To 110 Years

PHILADELPHIA — One of the two Philadelphia prison escapees in 2023 has been hit with a hefty prison sentence for his role in four murders and the escape.

The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office Thursday said Ameen Hurst, 20, was sentenced to 55 to 110 years in prison.

Hurst in late 2020 killed Dyewou Scruggs, 20, then in 2021 fatally shot Naquan Smith, 24, and Tamir Brown, 17.

Shortly after that deadly shooting, Hurst shot and killed Rodney Hargrove, 20.

Hurst was incarcerated at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center starting in April 2021, but in May 2023, he and Nasir Grant escaped the facility.

Eventually, he was taken into custody May 17, 2023, at 6100 Washington Avenue without incident, 10 days after escaping. Grant was taken into custody May 11, 2023.

Amir Woods, Hurst's brother, was charged with criminal conspiracy, hindering apprehension, escape, and related crimes in connection with the escape.

Several others were also charged in connection with the escape.
