Philly Prisoners Escape Cells, Uprising Under Control: Reports

Inmates at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center staged an uprising overnight, but the movement was placed under control.

PHILADELPHIA — Nearly 100 prison inmates at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center escaped from their cells and staged an apparent uprising early Thursday, according to reports.

The uprising occurred at around 11 p.m. Wednesday, NBC10 reports, when 87 inmates managed to get out of their cells.

One inmate managed to break his cell window and open his door, and then proceeded to open other cells, the outlet reports.

More guards armed with riot gear showed up to get the situation under control, according to Action News.

Just one guard was assigned to the unit, reports state.

The prison is located in the Holmesburg section of the city along the Delaware River.

No injuries were reported during the incident.
