Ridding medicine cabinets of these medications is an important step in combatting the growing opioid and heroin epidemic, which often begins with prescription medicines taken from a home medicine cabinet.
Prescription medicines can be in their original prescription bottles with the label removed or can be placed in plastic bags. During the 2015 spring Montgomery County Take Back Day, 3,655 pounds of unwanted medications were collected at the collection sites and through the permanent boxes. That’s a huge jump from the 513 pounds collected during the county’s first Take Back Day in 2010, which reflects the growing awareness by the general public of the need to safely dispose of these medications, according to Steele.
