Newly Elected State Rep. Melissa Shusterman Named Deputy Whip
State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, who represents the 157th District, is the first freshman legislator to earn the distinction.

PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Newly elected State Rep. Melissa Shusterman, who represents the 157th District, has been named the deputy whip for the House Democratic Caucus.
She is the first freshman legislator to ever earn the distinction, according to her office.
“The freshman class of representatives is full of extraordinary leaders,” Shusterman said in a statement. "It is a strong and diverse group. I look forward to using this role to work with my freshman colleagues and listen to them so we can achieve our goals together."

The new House Session includes 51 women, a record number for the Pennsylvania legislature.
Shusterman was one of several local first-time, female, Democratic candidates who won upset or closely contested victories last November. She defeated eight-year incumbent Republican Warren Kampf by a margin of more than 4,000 votes.

As whip, Shusterman will effectively be the "second in command" of the Democratic Caucus, ensuring Democratic attendance at House sessions, instructing members on legislative specifics, and bringing representatives to a consensus within her party.
The 157th is comprised of parts of Poenixville, Upper Providence, Schuylkill, and Tredyffrin.
