The trees have begun to shed their leaves and each day the newspapers grow heavier with advertisements–sure signs of the encroaching holidays. While traveling, gift giving and baking are likely at the forefront of most minds, decorating for the season may seem like a daunting task – but it doesn’t have to be! I try to keep the décor simple and sophisticated—less is always more!
Try to emulate the mood associated with a particular time of year by focusing on materials and textures. I know it’s hard for some to resist the brightly colored novelty items that line the shelves this time of the year, but selecting a few non-intimidating pieces can turn a typical room into a winter wonderland.
Clients who have asked me to create a holiday decoration scheme are always surprised when they see how much of an impact just a few items make on a space. The right pieces are the ones that don’t try too hard and are of high quality.
I recommend buying practical pieces that aren’t so ostentatious that they look silly after being on display a day after the holiday ends. That way, you get much more “bang for your buck” and you’re able to enjoy them for a longer time.
