Allegheny County Confirms First 2 Cases Of Omicron
Two people in the county have contracted the omicron coronavirus variant.

PITTSBURGH, PA — The first two confirmed cases of omicron in Allegheny County residents were reported Thursday by the county health department. The announcement came less than 24 hours after health department Director Dr. Debra Bogen reported the coronavirus variant had been found in wastewater samples.
The first case, from a specimen collected from a male adult on Dec. 7, was confirmed on Wednesday. The second case, also found in a male adult, was from a specimen collected Dec. 13 and was confirmed to be the omicron variant on December 23.
“Omicron is highly contagious and is causing daily cases to rapidly increase in other parts of the country and world,” Bogen said Wednesday during the county’s regular COVID briefing. “I expect we will see a rapid rise in the omicron variant in our county in the coming days and weeks."
