PITTSBURGH, PA — Nearly five years after he was traded, Andrew McCutchen is back with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Bucs signed McCutchen, a five-time All-Star, to a one-year, $5 million contract on Friday.

"We are thrilled to be able to reunite with Andrew. His return just feels right. It is right for our team, for Andrew and his family, for our fans and for the game of baseball,” Pirates chairman Bob Nutting said in a statement.

“Andrew is a special player and person. It is going to be exciting to again see him take the field wearing 22 in the black and gold.”

McCutchen, 36, won the National League's most valuable player award in 2013. The Pirates selected him with the 11th pick in the 2005 draft.

McCutchen was the catalyst that drove a previously moribund Pirates franchise that had not had a winning season since 1992 to three consecutive postseason appearances in 2013-15. He was traded to the San Francisco Giants in 2018 in a deal that included current Pirates star Bryan
Reynolds, who recently asked to be dealt.

In addition to the Giants, McCutchen since has played for the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers. He batted .237 for Milwaukee last year.
