In his nine seasons with the Pirates, McCutchen collected nearly 1400 hits, more than 200 home runs and had a batting average of .291. He played at least 146 games per season for the last eight years.

According to Baseball Reference, he's projected in 2018 to have a batting average of .268 with 77 RBI and 23 home runs.

The move follows the Giants trade for third baseman Evan Longoria. The team hopes the two right-handed hitters can help bolster an anemic lineup that ranked second-to-last in the MLB in runs scored last season and 19th the year before.
