Anthony Bourdain Dies; Celebrity Chef Spotlighted Pittsburgh

Bourdain, whose "Parts Unknown" show focused on Pittsburgh in October, was 61.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Anthony Bourdain, the celebrity chef and author whose CNN series “Parts Unknown” spotlighted Pittsburgh last fall, was found dead Friday in his Paris hotel room. Authorities believe Bourdain committed suicide.

It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain,” a CNN statement said. “His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller. His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much. Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Mr. Bourdain, 61, graduated in 1978 from the Culinary Institute of America and a published his first book, “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly” in 2000. He hosted “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” on the Travel Channel from 2005 to 2012 before switching to CNN in 2013.

Mr. Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” Pittsburgh episode, which aired in October, saw him visit Grandma B’s Cafe in the Hill District, Jozsa Corner in Hazelwood, Kelly’s Bar in East Liberty, Superior Motors in Braddock, Hidy’s Cafe in Braddock, the Squirrel Hill Cafe and the Salem Ukes Club in New Alexandria.

Mr. Bourdain is the second celebrity to commit suicide this week. Kate Spade, the founder and former co-owner of the designer brand Kate Spade New York, killed herself in her Manhattan apartment Tuesday.
