Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:
1) In need of a good bagel? Look no further, as Pittsburgh is home to some of the best. First up is Pigeon Bagels of Squirrel Hill. Garlic sea salt, "everything" and seeded marble are perfect places to start, but you really can't go wrong. Schmears go beyond cream cheese to include fig & honey, hummus, jalapeño and herbaceous vegan tofu. There are also bagel sandwiches with Acme Nova Lox (smoked Atlantic salmon) and or Vegan Carrot Lox. Next up is Gussy's Bagels & Deli of Oakland. The dough here is made fresh every morning and rises through natural fermentation. It has no sugar or corn syrup, though he adds honey for a touch of sweetness. The rings of dough are boiled, then baked in a 75-year-old Italian oven. Brooklyn Bagel at Arsenal of Lawrenceville is also a contender for best bagel. These ones come straight from New York, with lot of options — like hash browns, sausage and egg on a bagel. Finally, there's Farmer x Baker of Aspinwall. The bagels here are exceptional, and the organic-grain bagel sandwiches are pretty much the ultimate. The Veggie Beast features all the fresh or roasted or pickled veggies that they can find (just trust them). The Vegan BLT features pickled green tomatoes, greens, aioli and "sweet potato bacon."
2) A plethora of popular musical artists are set to perform in Pittsburgh—including P!nk, Lizzo, and Foreigner along their farewell tour. P!nk's Summer Carnival 2023 stadium tour will include PNC Park on Aug. 5th, 2023. Presale tickets will be available on Wednesday, while tickets for the general public will go on sale Monday. "Lizzo: The Special 2our" is scheduled to make a stop at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday, May 13, with special guest Latto. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday at ticketmaster.com, following presales that begin Wednesday. And rounding out the trio next summer, Foreigner, the classic rock band, will embark on a farewell tour that will stop in Pittsburgh on July 29th at the Pavilion at Star Lake. Tickets go on sale Nov. 18th at livenation.com.
3) Various Pittsburgh eateries are offering preorder options for Thanksgiving pies, vegan options, ravioli, and more. Piebird of Lawrenceville offers a full list of handmade pies, including pumpkin custard, bourbon pecan, salted caramel apple, apple brown butter crumb, or cranberry raspberry ginger crumb. Online ordering ends on Thu., Nov. 17 at 5 p.m., so visit piebirdpgh.com/holiday and get yours now. Abeille Voyante Tea Co. of Millvale is serving up a turkey-replacement of bake-at-home lentil loaf. The vegan main dish is made with lentils, brown rice, kale, carrots, onions, garlic, mushrooms, and cranberries. Those with dietary restrictions can also get gluten-free or nut-free versions. Top it all off with gluten-free mushroom gravy. Order now at the "specialty vegan" page on the shop's website. Saint Ravioli of Bloomfield will have pierogis on sale. On Sun., Nov. 20 at 8 p.m., head to the Saint Ravioli Instagram page to order Ringraziamento dumplings made with three-day, orange-brined, roasted turkey covered in bacon weave, crammed in with parmesan stuffing, cranberry sauce, and ricotta. It comes as a combo with bacon gravy. Also available to order are Zucca butternut ravioli. Pick-up will take place on the following Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at the Saint Ravioli Bloomfield shop. Finally, Farmer x Baker in Aspinwall will be serving traditional Thanksgiving items for pre-order, including roasted turkey, whipped potatoes, herb gravy, stuffing, cranberries, and challah rolls. You can also choose from sides like herb-roasted root vegetables, maple pecan sweet potatoes, balsamic Brussels sprouts and crispy rosemary ham, and more. Add on a charcuterie board or root vegetable pasta terrine, or choose from a variety of desserts, including a flourless dark chocolate cake. Orders can be placed at farmerxbaker.com and picked up on Wed., Nov. 23 at the 1101 Powers Run Road location. Delivery is also available for a $20 fee.
4) A Crafton Heights woman wants to thank the very generous folks who restored the magic of her holiday season through donations. Christmas has come early for Jill Cole and her daughter after several good Samaritans paid it forward this holiday season in a big way. Last week, a news outlet shared the story of a thief stealing Cole's outdoor Christmas tree, several of her daughter's toys, and other items from their Crafton Heights home, costing Cole at least $1,000."I have fibro(myalgia). I can't sit or stand more than 10 minutes. My memory is not as good as it used to be. My writing is getting horrible," Cole said. After hearing the news, many folks reached out to help. First, one of 'Santa's elves', who wished to remain anonymous, sent Cole a security camera so she could keep an eye on her property. Another good Samaritan visited Cole's house, bringing her a white Christmas tree, just like the one that was stolen, as well as new decorations, clothing, candy and presents for her daughter. Cole said people in her community have also given her money. "Thank you very much. I really appreciate it," Cole said. "God will treat you right when you're in Heaven." Pittsburgh police are continuing to look into the theft.
5) Food Network celebrity Guy Fieri has opened Pennsylvania's first Chicken Guy! franchise, right here in Pittsburgh. The restaurant debuted on Monday, Downtown at 4 PPG Place at the corner of Third avenue and Market Street. According to the eatery's website, Chicken Guy! features all-natural, hand-pounded fresh chicken tenders paired with a selection of sauces. The tenders are brined in fresh lemon juice, pickle brine and buttermilk and infused with fresh herbs. The restaurant will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
