Bicyclist Electrocuted In North Park Was Beloved High School Teacher

PITTSBURGH, PA —A veteran teacher at Central Catholic High School has been identified as the bicyclist who was electrocuted after hitting downed power lines in North Park on Tuesday evening.

Robert Anderson was an avid bicyclist who had taught physical education and health at the private school in the city's Oakland section since 2005. Emergency responders found him down among the wires after severe storms swept through the region on Monday.

Anderson, 63, of Wexford, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident occurred along Pearce Mill Road near Olympia Grove.

The school on Wednesday issued a statement regarding Anderson's death.

“Throughout his time at our school, Mr. Anderson played an important role in educating students on the need for personal health and wellness. Mr. Anderson was dedicated to the students entrusted to his care and the mission of Central Catholic,” a post on the school's Facebook page stated.

“Everyone who knew him mourns his passing, as he was an integral member of our school’s community. I am certain that the Central Catholic community will join me in prayer as we collectively extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Anderson’s family and friends.”

Allegheny County police are investigating Anderson's death.

Investigators said the trail was closed Tuesday morning after police were notified of downed wires and smoking along the trail. Duquesne Light Company was contacted around 8:50 a.m. and caution tape was placed at the main entrance of the trail, police said.

Duquesne Light has confirmed it had been notified of downed lines. The utility said it is probing the fatality and offered condolences to Anderson's family.
