PENNSYLVANIA — Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has condemned President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus outbreak after the Pennsylvania Department of Health announced that the number of cases in the state has surpassed 200,000.

"The news that Pennsylvania has passed the grim milestone of 200,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases is a tragic reminder that President Trump has failed at his most basic and essential duty, to keep American families safe," Biden said in a statement on his campaign website.

"Rather than working to contain the spread of the virus, President Trump continues to peddle the lie that America is rounding the corner on this pandemic. President Trump’s actions have cost thousands of lives and hundreds of thousands of jobs in Pennsylvania."

Biden's statement comes as several key battleground states - Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin - are experiencing spikes in coronavirus cases. Trump, however, continues to downplay the severity of the pandemic.

“Covid, covid, covid, covid, covid, covid cases — do you ever notice they use the word 'cases'?" Trump said at a rally in Michigan on Tuesday. "Like Barron Trump has a case, sniffles, one Kleenex and he was better."
