PITTSBURGH, PA - It wasn’t hard to predict, really. When J.C. Penney declared bankruptcy in May, there was little doubt that its Century III Mall location likely would close. The store was added this week to a list of more than 150 that the retailer will shutter as it attempts to survive.

An official closing date has not been announced, but when that date finally arrives, it will trigger the end of an era. J.C. Penney is the mall’s last remaining retailer. When it’s gone, Century III will officially be dead - a nearly unthinkable thought from those who remember the mall’s popularity in its heyday.

What’s next for the massive building in West Mifflin remains unknown.
