BUTLER, PA — National recognition continues to pour in for Corey Comperatore, the former fire chief who was killed in the July 13 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Butler rally.

U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-PA, whose Congressional district includes Butler has introduced a resolution honoring Comperatore. More than 70 other representatives have co-sponsored the resolution.

Comperatore, 50, of Sarver, died in the attack on Trump while shielding his family members from gunfire that seriously wounded two other rally spectators and left the former president with an ear wound. The shooter, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by a U.S. Secret Service agent.

"Corey Comperatore exemplified what it means to be a man of service and sacrifice to his community, his country, and most of all, his family. This resolution is just one way members of Congress can honor his life and pay tribute to a true hero," Kelly said in a release. "Those who know Corey tell me he was a proud husband and father. May we continue to pray for Corey’s family and friends at this time."

Trump mentioned Comperatore during his acceptance speech Thursday for the GOP presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, and had his firefighter garb onstage during the address.

Comperatore was laid to rest Friday in a private funeral. He is survived by his wife, Helen, and daughters Allyson and Kaylee.

The House Oversight Committee conducted the initial Congressional hearing into the assassination attempt on Monday. The House Homeland Security Committee holds its hearing on the incident on Tuesday.
