Here are the top stories in Pittsburgh today:
1) Mayor Ed Gainey and Council President Theresa Kail-Smith recently announced a new advisory committee to join the efforts of the city's Plan for Peace initiative, with a focus on a special project: opening Youth and Family Resource Centers throughout the area. "We believe that providing opportunities for our kids while providing social services for their families is a critical tool in our Plan for Peace," said Mayor Gainey. The pending committee will be composed of nine members, who will each have a focus of study on different approaches to creating the centers. Five members will be selected by City Council appointment, and the remaining four will be Mayor Gainey's selections. The intention for the committee is to address and respond to the increase in violence Pittsburgh is experiencing among youth populations.
2) In yesterday's edition, Patch reported a missing 14-year-old girl from the Wilkinsburg area. We're happy to share that she has returned home safely. Police report that the whereabouts of Denaejah Waller were once again known on Wednesday.
3) Pittsburgh-area front line workers in retail and food service industries might be gaining a new skillset if a proposed City Council program passes. City Councilwoman Deb Gross recently brought forth legislation that would create programming to train said workers on how to deal with people in crisis. "The program would include training in de-escalation, overdose response, Narcan administration and homeless response, according to the legislation." The idea for implementing a program of this nature spawned from a recent increase in people who face mental health struggles, addiction or homelessness showing up often at stores, restaurants or other businesses where the staff may not be equipped to help people in need.

4) Nature-lovers and outdoor enthusiasts might stick to hanging out in Pittsburgh — at least, that's what the real estate listing company CommercialSearch thinks. They recently ranked the city as the 8th best place for outdoor enthusiasts among urban areas with fewer than 500,000 residents. In order to make the list, Pittsburgh had to stack up against other cities on factors like parks, outdoor amenities, outdoor trails per resident, air quality, number of clear days per year, walkability and recreation places.
5) Dave Matthews Band's upcoming tour "Walk Around the Moon" will include a June 23 stop at the Pavilion at Star Lake. The upcoming show will follow the drop of DMB's 10th studio album, releasing in May. "An online ticket pre-sale for members of the DMB Warehouse Fan Association is underway now at the Warehouse. Citi card members will have access to presale tickets beginning Feb. 14."
