PITTSBURGH, PA — Republican David McCormick will make a second bid for the U.S. Senate and is expected to announce his candidacy Thursday during an event at the Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh's Strip District.

McCormick, a former hedge fund CEO who was raised in Pittsburgh, hopes to unseat three-term Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.

McCormick, 58, entered last year's race for the seat being vacated by retiring Sen. Pat Toomey, but narrowly lost to celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz in the GOP primary. Democrat John Fetterman, Pennsylvania's former lieutenant governor, defeated Oz in the November election.

Despite his loss last year, high-ranking Republicans have been urging him for months to run for the seat. McCormick at this point seemingly will be the only GOP candidate in a race sure to receive national attention because it could determine whether Democrats maintain control of the Senate.

It's likely to be an expensive campaign for both candidates. McCormick is a multimillionaire who funneled millions into last year's campaign. But Casey's campaign announced in July that it had raised $4 million in the year's second quarter and had $6 million in the campaign war chest.

Casey, 63, is a strong ally of labor unions and President Joe Biden.
