PITTSBURGH, PA — Veteran U.S. Rep. Mike Doyle won an apparent victory over challenger Jerry Dickinson Tuesday in the 18th Congressional District Democratic primary.

Doyle had 45,861 votes to Dickinson's 18,358 , with 1,322 of 1,323 precincts reporting by processed absentee and mail-in ballots. The vast majority of voting in the primary was done in those ways across the state due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The results are unofficial and all votes in the primary will not be counted for at least a week. Gov. Tom Wolf on Monday signed an executive order extending the deadline to receive mail-in ballots in Allegheny and five other counties to June 9.

Dickinson, a Swissvale resident University of Pittsburgh School of Law professor, ran a progressive campaign against Doyle that focused on health care reform, the climate crisis and the influence of corporate money on government.
