Family Dollar Closing Nearly 400 Stores

The troubled retailer operates several dozen stores in southwestern Pennsylvania.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Nearly 400 Family Dollar stores will close nationwide this year, while another 200 will be converted to Dollar Tree, which purchased the rival chain in 2015.

Other Family Dollars will will keep their name will be stocked with $1 Dollar Tree merchandise and alcohol sections. The changes likely will boost traffic and sales, Dollar Tree CEO Gary Philbin asserted in a news release.

"We are confident we are taking the appropriate steps to reposition our Family Dollar brand," Dollar Tree CEO Gary Philbin said in a news release Wednesday. In the wake of Starboard's criticism, Dollar Tree also will begin testing higher-priced products at its stores.

Family Dollar’s 8,000 stores cater to low-income shoppers and sell products for under $10. Dollar Tree, which operates 7,000 other stores primarily in suburban areas, sells all of its products for $1.

Dollar Tree did not immediately indicate which Family Dollars will close or become Dollar Trees. In the Pittsburgh metro area, Family Dollar stores are located in the following communities (some have multiple stores):
