PITTSBURGH, PA — The growing season in Western Pennsylvania appears to be nearing its end. The National Weather Service said the first frost of the fall could occur overnight Sunday into Monday morning.

The weather service on Friday put out an alert that frost advisories and freeze alerts might need to be issued.

According to theOld Farmer's Almanac, the classification of freeze temperatures is based on their effect on plants. In a light freeze (29-32 degrees), tender plants are killed. In a moderate freeze (25-28 degrees), there is widespread destruction to most vegetation. In a sever freeze (24 degrees and colder), there is heavy damage to most garden plants.
