Former Allegheny County Manager Glenn Cannon Dies

Mr. Cannon had a four-decade career in emergency management.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Glenn Cannon, the founding director of Pittsburgh’s Emergency Medical
Services and former Pittsburgh public safety director and Allegheny County manager, died Monday. He was 71.

Mr. Cannon had a 40-year career in emergency management and was recruited by President
George W. Bush to serve as director of disaster operations for the Department of Homeland Security following Hurricane Katrina. He later served as Director of Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

“Few people in the history of our city can match Mr. Cannon in terms of contributions to Pittsburgh and Public Safety,” current Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich said. "He was an extraordinary man who lived an exemplary life. His legacy lives on today as the creator and first leader of the city’s EMS department, and in countless other ways. This is a great loss. Glenn Cannon was a great man and a great Pittsburgher.”

Mr. Cannon was a longtime member of Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) and was serving as its state treasurer at the time of his passing. He was also serving on the Council of Trustees for Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCable Brothers in Shadyside.
