Google's 12,000 Layoffs Could Impact Company's Pittsburgh Office
Google's parent company announced Friday it was eliminating about 6 percent of its staff.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Google parent company Alphabet is cutting 12,000 jobs from its workforce, but it's uncertain how many of its Pittsburgh-based employees are being laid off.
Google on Friday announced the staff reductions, which amount to about 6 percent of its work force.
"We’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company,"Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a statement posted on the company's website.

"The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions."
The company did not announce how many workers will be eliminated in its individual locations globally.

Affected employees in the United States will be kept on the company’s payroll for 60 days and receive at least 16-weeks salary in severance, in addition to other benefits, according to Pichai.
According to the Technical.ly website, Google employs about 800 people in Pittsburgh. Last year, the company was reportedly looking to expand its offices in Bakery Square to 320,000 square feet.
