Here are the top stories today in Pittsburgh:
1) Pittsburgh's newly acquired Hays Woods Park will be undergoing ecosystem improvements soon, all thanks to $233,000 in grant money from the Richard King Mellon Foundation and a partnership with Allegheny Goatscape. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy is partnering with the organization to remove invasive plant species from the park's grounds. The wooded space in Pittsburgh's Hays neighborhood officially became a city park in December 2021. It is the city's second-largest park. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy will look to revisit key habitat sites to assess their current conditions and perform maintenance work to ensure they are stable for future comprehensive management plans, the organization said.

2) A police chase ending in a crash and causing road closures along Route 51 resulted in three suspects being taken into custody and one suspect being hospitalized. The vehicle in question crashed at the BP gas station near Woodruff Street at around 2:40 p.m. According to Pittsburgh police, four males exited the vehicle following the crash and fled on foot. One of the suspects was hit by a car driven by one of the detectives, police said. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while the other three males were apprehended at the scene and taken to Pittsburgh police headquarters. The Allegheny County Police Department will investigate both the initial pursuit and the critical incident, police said.
3) State Rep. Jessica Benham (D-South Side) is the new co-chair of the state legislature's LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. Benham, who is bisexual, became the first open LGBTQ woman to serve on Pennsylvania's state legislature when she was first elected in 2020. She is openly autistic and likely the first openly autistic elected official in state history. "Representative matters because we legislate from our lived experience," said Benham. "My advocacy is driven by what I have gone through as a queer woman." Benham said her top priority as co-chair will be continuing the caucus' advocacy to pass the Fairness Act, a law to ensure statewide non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ individual.

4) Pittsburgh Police Officer Aaron Fetty, who was accused of sexual assault by a colleague in September 2022, is set to be reinstated to the force with back pay. The decision follows a grievance filed by the Fraternal Order of Police seeking to reinstate Fetty, and an arbitration panel sided with the FOP, voting two to one in Fetty's favor. The city has appealed the ruling to Common Pleas Court, and the case will soon be assigned to a judge.
5) Oyster lovers have had one less dining option in Pittsburgh since The Original Oyster House closed its doors on Jan. 1. Believed to be the city's oldest bar and restaurant, the Original Oyster House held a meeting with its 10 employees prior to making a closure decision and asked: 'Should we temporarily close for six weeks to give everyone a break?' They had done just that the past two years, due to pandemic and staffing challenges. The restaurant will reopen Feb. 15, a week before Lent begins, the restaurant's busiest time of the year.
