High Winds Certain For Pittsburgh, Severe Storms Possible

The National Weather Service is predicting dual weather threats for Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania. Find out here when they are likely.

PITTSBURGH, PA — More than 50,000 Duquesne Light customers lost power last Saturday when high winds roared through the area. A similar weather setup is likely this Saturday, along with a chance of severe storms.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for Western Pennsylvania from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wind gusts as high as 60 mph could occur. The weather service warned that damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines.

Widespread power outages are possible, according to the weather service. Travel could be difficult,
especially for high profile vehicles.

In addition to the high winds, the weather service says there is a risk of severe thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and evening. A few of the storms could pack winds as high as 75 mph and produce hail two inches in diameter. Isolated tornadoes are possible.

Duquesne Light reminds customers that the fastest way to report an outage is online or through the free DLC Mobile app. Those without internet access should call 412-393-7000. Crews are aware of outages as soon as they are reported, although some outages might not immediately appear on the DLC outage map.

Customers experiencing a prolonged power outage should keep their refrigerator doors closed as much as possible. If the outage lasts longer than 4 hours, dairy, meat and poultry products should be discarded. If the outage lasts longer that 24 hours, everything in the refrigerator should be thrown away.

A half-full freezer is good for 24 hours if left unopened, while one that is full will last 48 hours.
