The devastating storm already is slamming Florida. Will the hurricane's remnants reach Pittsburgh?

PITTSBURGH, PA — While the country watches the incredible impact Hurricane Ian is expected to bring to Florida as it slams into the state on Wednesday, the question locally is whether the storm's remnants could eventually impact the Pittsburgh area.
Western Pennsylvania, on average, experiences rainfall from the remnants of a hurricane or tropical storm twice every 5 years, according to the National Weather Service. Most recently was in 2021, when the remnants of Hurricane Ida dropped nearly 2.5 inches of rain on the area.
In 2004, the remnants of Hurricane Ivan caused massive flooding here with nearly 6 inches of rain occurring as the storm passed through.

State College-based AccuWeather's current models have Ian's remnants passing just south and east of the Pittsburgh area on Monday, but those models are subject to change depending on the storm's path.
The National Weather Service is predicting a chance of rain Saturday through Monday.
