Pack Your Umbrella, Pittsburgh: Ida Remnants To Bring Heavy Rain, Flooding To Area

Find out here when the remnants of Hurricane Ida will begin to bring heavy rain and flooding to Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania.

The Monongahela River near Elizabeth, affecting Allegheny and Washington counties.PITTSBURGH, PA — Hurricane Ida's remnants likely will cause flooding in and around Pittsburgh. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for southwestern Pennsylvania from 2 a.m. Wednesday until 2 a.m. Thursday, and a river flood advisory for the Ohio and Monongahela rivers also has been issued.

Pittsburgh is expected to receive 2 to 3 inches of rain, with areas to the south and east getting as much as six inches. Areas north and west of the city will receive lesser amounts of precipitation.

Scattered storms are expected Tuesday, with the heavier rain moving in overnight.

The Ohio River at Pittsburgh is expected to crest at 22.3 feet early Thursday afternoon. While that's below the flood stage, the water level will be high enough to cause flooding Downtown and on the North Shore.

According to the weather service:

  • At 18 feet, water begins flowing onto the Mon Parking Wharf.
  • At 19 feet, water begins flowing onto the North Shore riverwalk between PNC Park and Heinz Field.
  • At 19.5 feet, the Mon parking wharf is completely flooded.
  • At 20 feet, water is up to one foot deep in the lower areas of the North Shore riverwalk.
  • At 22 feet, the Tenth Street Bypass floods.

Additionally, flood watches remain for:

  • The Monongahela River at Braddock in Allegheny County.
  • The Monongahela River near Elizabeth, affecting Allegheny and Washington counties.
  • The Monongahela River near Charleroi affecting Washington, Westmoreland and Fayette counties.
  • The Conemaugh River at Seward, affecting Indiana and higher elevations of Westmoreland zones.
  • The Youghiogheny River at Connellsville, affecting Fayette County.
  • The Monongahela River at Grays Landing, affecting Greene and Fayette counties.
  • The Monongahela River At Point Marion, affecting Greene and Fayette counties.
