WEST MIFFLIN, PA — State Rep. Nick Pisciottano is rankled over Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala's threat to keep Kennywood from opening this season if it doesn't adopt his mandated security improvements.

Pisciottano, a West Mifflin Democrat, said Zappala acted irresponsibly when he said he would go to court to prevent the amusement park from starting the 2023 season if Kennywood doesn't implement the new standards. At a news conference on Friday, however, Zappala didn't cite any specific suggestions Kennywood is resisting.

"Staging a press conference threatening a major economic driver for the Mon Valley less than a month ahead of its 125th Anniversary opening day is not responsible treatment of a regional historic treasure and national tourist destination in Allegheny County," Pisciottano said.

"I encourage the district attorney to make clear what his specific concerns are, what recommendations are not being met, and actively participate in ongoing discussions in the community so that families across Pennsylvania can safety enjoy Kennywood Park this season.”

Zappala's office made safety recommendations to the park after last September's shooting there
in which three people were injured. Two teenagers and a 39-year-old man were shot Sept. 24 near near the Musik Express ride during Kennywood's Phantom Fall Fest.

A 15-year-old initially was charged was charged with the shooting, but a judge dismissed the case.

Pisciottano said he has worked with Kennywood management since the shooting on its efforts to ensure the park is safe for all attendees - including his own family.

"I’ve seen firsthand the security upgrades Kennywood management has made in response to that event. Like many others in our region, I look forward to enjoying Kennywood Park this summer with my family in a safe environment based on the security improvements instituted since last September."
