Legendary Pittsburgh Ice Cream Shop For Sale: Here's The Scoop

One of Pittsburgh's beloved ice cream shops is on the market.

PITTSBURGH, PA — Klavon's Ice Cream Parlor, a Strip District institution for nearly a century, is on the market. Owner Jacob Hanchar announced the move Monday.

Hanchar offered reassurances that Klavon's, which opened in 1923, is not closing. But the success of his robotics company, Digital Dream Labs, is requiring too much of his time to successfully operate both businesses.

"It’s bittersweet. But I’m not able to give the shop the attention deserves," Hanchar said in a release. "In the past six months, I’ve had my head down focusing on Digital Dream Labs. The shop’s getting shortchanged and that’s not fair to Pittsburgh or Klavon’s.”

Hanchar, who purchased the business in 2013, said record sales occurred in 2019 before the pandemic. He believes similar sales will return this year.

“People come from all over the country to visit us," he said. "It’s a Pittsburgh icon, a Pittsburgh institution.”
