Major Multi-Year Pittsburgh Highway Rehab Begins
Expect plenty of traffic headaches for the next several years on a heavily-traveled Pittsburgh highway.
PITTSBURGH, PA — A nearly three-year million construction project begins Wednesday on the Parkway East. The first phase will occur between Churchill and Monroeville.
According to PennDOT, no work will occur during rush hours. However, there will be single-lane restrictions during the midday hours between 6 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weeknights at least through early April.
The initial work will consist of patching potholes, barrier work and survey work for the construction that is coming.

The work is part of a project that will continue through the fall of 2026. The larger project also includes work on several bridges.
Last month, President Joe Biden's administration announced more than $142 million in federal funding to make improvements on the Parkway East.

The primary project will be a permanent fix to the area near Downtown known as "the bathtub" that runs near the Monongahela Wharf. The nickname was obtained because that area of the parkway often floods when the Monongahela River rises and spills over concrete walls.
The money also will be used to help prevent landslides that force emergency road closures. The project will also improve traffic management through dynamic lane use, dynamic speed limits, wrong way vehicle detection, and queue warning systems that are expected to reduce the higher-than-average crashes on the Parkway East in the project area.
