Major Pittsburgh Highway Getting $142 Million Upgrade
The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced funding for major improvements to a key Pittsburgh roadway.
PITTSBURGH, PA — More than $142 million in federal funding to make improvements on Pittsburgh's Parkway East was announced Thursday. The money is part of $5 billion in infrastructure improvements that President Joe Biden's administration announced.
The primary project will be a permanent fix to the area near Downtown known as "the bathtub" that runs near the Monongahela Wharf. The nickname was obtained because that area of the parkway often floods when the Monongahela River rises and spills over concrete walls.
The money also will be used to help prevent landslides that force emergency road closures. The project will also improve traffic management through dynamic lane use, dynamic speed limits, wrong way vehicle detection, and queue warning systems that are expected to reduce the higher-than-average crashes on the Parkway East in the project area.
