Major Townhouse Project Planned For Mt. Washington's Grandview Ave.

Pittsburgh officials next week will be briefed on one of the largest projects proposed for Mt. Washington in decades.

(Pittsburgh Planning Commission)

PITTSBURGH, PA — A stretch of Grandview Avenue on Mt. Washington that has been mostly vacant for decades soon could be the site of a 23-unit townhouse development.

Developer Laurel Communities, which has built townhouses at Bakery Square in East Liberty in the Strip District, will brief the city planning commission on the project Tuesday. The development would be built on Grandview from Republic Street to Augusta Street, near the Monterey Bay Fish Grotto, the entrance to Emerald View Park and a parklet popular among tourists for its spectacular city view.

Twenty of the 23 townhouses would front Grandview. Two would be built on Augusta and one would be built on Shaler; those three units would be adjacent to the Grandview units.

Laurel has said trees would be planted on Grandview along the stretch of the development, while garages for the units would be relegated to the rear of the properties.

If the project received planning commission approval, it still would need city council's OK to proceed. Documents provided in advance of Tuesday's meeting did not indicate when construction could begin or when occupancy of the units could occur.
