Man Killed In Police Shootout Fired Two Rounds: Investigators

A traffic stop Thursday left Elijah Brewer dead and a Pittsburgh police officer wounded.

PITTSBURGH, PA - Allegheny County police investigating a shooting incident on the North Side that left a Mt. Oliver man dead and a Pittsburgh police officer wounded said Friday the dead man fired at least two rounds at four city detectives.

The detectives also fired shots in the 200 block of busy East Ohio Street as a traffic stop turned deadly and Elijah Brewer, 25, was fatally wounded. County Police Superintendent Coleman McDonough said at a news conference that investigators have not yet determined who began firing first.

Also unclear is whether one of the shots fired by Brewer was the one that injured the unidentified officer, who was shot in the hip. His injuries are non-life threatening.

County police said the four city detectives traveling in an unmarked vehicle with its lights activated pulled over the vehicle in which Brewer was a passenger at 6:55 p.m. The detectives smelled burnt marijuana as they approached the car.

The driver of the car ran off during the gunfire but was later apprehended.

A 9 mm handgun was recovered from Brewer's right hand. According to police, Brewer wasn't allowed to have a gun because he was on parole following a 2014 guilty plea to charges that included aggravated assault and a firearms violation.

County police said city detectives were not wearing body cameras. County police are looking for witnesses and surveillance video and ask that anyone with information call the Allegheny County Police Tipline at 1-833-255-8477.
