PITTSBURGH, PA — A man suffered severe injuries early Wednesday in an attack on a Downtown Pittsburgh street.
Police were called to Cherry Way at First Avenue at around 3 a.m. in response to a 911 call for a man found injured and unresponsive on the ground.
First responders found an unconscious man of unknown age with injuries to the back of his head and a serious contusion to one eye. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition where he remains intubated and unable to speak to police.

The 911 caller told officers they did not know the man.
Police are reviewing all available video footage of the area in an effort to determine what happened.

The attack occurred two days after city public safety officials announced the city soon will embark on a high-visibility police patrol initiative in the Central Business District. The increased law enforcement presence is being implemented after what officials have described as "a recent uptick" in crime and disorderly activity Downtown.
