Man With Stolen Harp Leaps Into Pittsburgh River: Police

PITTSBURGH, PA —A man with an expensive and stolen harp in his possession disrobed before jumping into the river at Point State Park on Wednesday, authorities said.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials, just before 3:30 p.m., Pittsburgh EMS, River Rescue, Pittsburgh Police, Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, and DCNR Rangers responded to reports of a man in the water at the park.

Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources rangers and city police were able to bring the man to shore before the arrival of other units. The man was treated at the scene and then taken to UPMC Mercy in stable condition.

It is unclear why the unidentified man jumped into the river.

Authorities said that before his rescue, the man brought a full-sized harp to the riverbank before undressing and plunging into the river.

Pittsburgh police located the owner of harp, which was stolen from a residence in Bethel Park and is valued at $30,000.

Bethel Park police are handling the burglary investigation related to the incident, while DCNR Rangers will be pursuing charges of receiving stolen property.

The investigation is ongoing.
